This new residential build supports the University of York’s “Campus for the Future” masterplan. The flagship scheme will help transform the Heslington East Campus with 20 residential blocks accommodating 1480 students. The scheme comprises a northern, central and southern site, housing two central amenity hubs on the northern and southern sites respectively and a large, open space in the remaining central site.

Cundall’s multidisciplinary team is working in unison to deliver this project. We adopted an off-site precast modular solution, a methodology that brings enhanced quality and delivers confidence to the ambitious residential scheme. Our geotechnical team undertook a comprehensive and pragmatic re-evaluation of the site’s previously prescribed land quality status. They adopted lime stabilisation across the site to create a stable robust working platform from the in situ weak soils, avoiding large volumes of excavation and reducing import of stone.

Rob Turner commented, "Cundall was engaged by our client at the beginning of a competitive dialogue process with the University. Our multi-disciplinary team developed a holistic design based upon a precast ‘modern methods of construction’ structural solution. The slimline solution allowed the University’s stringent acoustic requirements to be achieved while maximising the number of residential units which could be accommodated on site, without exceeding pre-defined building heights attached to the outline planning consent."
